Sleep affects virtually every aspect of our lives, yet the people working to understand, improve and treat sleep are spread across many different professions, organisations, disciplines and countries.
The Sleep Society (TSS) was created to help bring that community together.
TSS is an international, interdisciplinary sleep health community connecting healthcare professionals, researchers, academics, educators, organisations and industry with a shared interest in improving sleep health. Its purpose is not to replace the many excellent professional associations already serving individual disciplines. Instead, it provides a broader meeting place where people working in different areas of sleep can connect, communicate and collaborate.
Sleep medicine itself demonstrates why this matters. A person experiencing a sleep problem may encounter family physicians, sleep physicians, respirologists, psychologists, dentists, ENT surgeons, technologists, respiratory therapists, nurses, researchers and other professionals. Each brings different expertise, but ultimately they are contributing to the same objective: better sleep, better health and better lives.
The Sleep Society encourages professionals to look beyond traditional disciplinary and geographical boundaries. By creating opportunities to exchange knowledge, share research and education, develop professional relationships and learn from colleagues internationally, TSS aims to strengthen the wider sleep community while complementing the work of established professional organisations.
FROM PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE TO PUBLIC BENEFIT
Better professional collaboration is only part of the objective. Much of what is already known about sleep has still not reached the wider public.
Healthy sleep influences mental and cardiovascular health, childhood development, learning, workplace performance, road safety, ageing and quality of life. Sleep disorders are common, yet many remain undiagnosed or poorly understood. Increasing public understanding therefore requires healthcare, research, education and community engagement to work together.
Through SleepSafeCanada, The Sleep Society is developing a coordinated programme of public sleep-health education and awareness across Canada. Canada’s Sleep Calendar brings together eleven initiatives addressing important aspects of sleep, health and safety throughout the year—from mental health and children’s sleep to shift work, drowsy driving and workplace impairment.
These initiatives provide opportunities for professionals, researchers, educators, governments, employers, community organisations and the public to contribute to a shared conversation about the importance of sleep.
BUILDING CONNECTIONS
The Sleep Society is developing a growing international professional network, educational resources, interdisciplinary events and opportunities for collaboration between individuals and organisations.
Members are encouraged not simply to belong, but to participate—to share knowledge, introduce colleagues, contribute educational material, develop collaborations and help make reliable sleep-health information more accessible.
The principle is straightforward: sleep does not belong to one profession, one discipline or one country.
By bringing together the people who research sleep, understand it, teach it, treat its disorders and communicate its importance, The Sleep Society aims to help turn knowledge into better health, greater safety and improved quality of life.
Connect. Communicate. Collaborate.
