Sleep Well, Age Well

October initiative · Sleep Well, Age Well. Understanding the importance of sleep in healthy ageing, independence and quality of life.

Importance

Living longer matters, but living well for longer matters more. Quality sleep supports brain health, physical function, emotional wellbeing and independence. Yet poor sleep is often dismissed as an inevitable part of getting older. While sleep patterns change with age, persistent sleep difficulties deserve attention.

Why it matters

Poor sleep affects more than just the next morning. Persistent sleep disruption and untreated sleep disorders are associated with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression and cognitive decline. Common conditions such as insomnia and sleep apnea often go unrecognized in older adults, but timely assessment can improve health, safety and quality of life.
